7 Tentative Sources

Here are my seven tentative sources I might use for my literature review:

  • "Moving International Technical Communication Forward: A World Englishes Approach" by Michael Jarvis Kwadzo Bokor. Published in Journal of Technical Writing and Communication.
  • "Cross-Cultural Blunders in Professional Communication from a Semantic Perspective" by Pinfan Zhu and Kirk St. Amant. Published in Journal of Technical Writing and Communication.
  • "Technical English and the Future" by Albert C. Yoder. Published in Journal of Technical Writing and Communication.
  • "Writing Globally: Teaching the Technical Writing Student to Prepare Documents for Translation" by Bruce Maylath. Published in Journal of Business and Technical Communication. 
  • "Teaching Intracultural and Intercultural Communication: A Critique and Suggested Method" by Danielle DeVoss, et al. Published in Journal of Business and Technical Communication.
  • "Technical Communication Across Cultures: Five Philosophical Questions" by Edmond H. Weiss. Published in Journal of Business and Technical Communication.
After a preliminary search of different article databases and field-specific journals, I think my topic is a little broad. My original idea was Writing for International Audiences: Challenges and Strategies. This prewriting exercise has helped me to see that I need to narrow my topic down. Now, I'm thinking of focusing more on the challenges and strategies of World Englishes in technical communication, which is similar to my first two sources. I still want my research to be an analysis, thus why I want to examine the challenges and strategies. World Englishes vary from region to region so I might need to pick only a few types of World English to focus on in my research proposal. I think comparing American English to a different World English could lead to interesting research and study.

    Hey Jaxon! It looks like you have compiled a solid list of sources for your literary review. I agree that your original topic might be too large of a base to cover. I think that your idea to focus on challenges and strategies is a great one. I personally wouldn't have thought of the topic you decided to chose. I am excited to read more about what you come up with as the project progresses. I will be interested to see which specific languages you decide to dedicate your research to. Keep up the great work!

 I'm really excited to take this class because I really enjoy learning about new things that I'm interested in. Technical writing is such a fascinating topic to me because of how broad and vast the topic is. This should be a great semester with lots of good research ahead.
